St. John the Apostle is the sixth oldest parish in the Dallas Diocese.  The original clapboard, Gothic-style church was dedicated November 19, 1876 and still stands across the street from the current church. Daily mass is still held in the old church.

A new building was dedicated in 1981 to replace the old church (located across the street) which is still standing and is the oldest church building and on the oldest church site in the city of Terrell.

 

The architect of the new church building was Ed Beran who was also the  architect for the World Trade Center and the Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas.  The building is Romanesque in style - made of concrete, brick, and antique tile. The outside statue of St. John the Apostle is hand carved in wood and sheathed in copper and brass. In selecting the style of the building, the committee took into account the neighborhood, the city, and area in which it was to stand.
